Hello everyone! How is the summer going so far? Did you recall old times already with Freedom Planet, the distant cousin of Sonic of which I talked about in the last entry? In this new entry I´m going to talk about another 2D game, although it is a much more contemporary game despite its classic aroma. Do you like classic action-adventure games and stories about apocalyptic worlds full of brain-eating undead such as The Walking Dead, World War Z or Dawn of the Dead? Yeah? Then keep reading, for I might have just the perfect game for you. The game is called Deadlight.
Deadlight is 2D (or 2.5D to be more precise) classic style action-adventure game published in 2012 and developed by Spanish studio Tequila Works, creators of the recent and notable Rime, a game that I strongly recommend to all of the Team ICO fans. The story of Deadlight takes us to Seattle in 1986. After the sudden outbreak of a virus that turns people into living dead known as Shadows, the world has plunged into complete chaos. We will play as Randall, a survivor looking for his missing wife and daughter. The truth is that the story of Deadlight is full of all your typical zombie story drama, with several situations that will remind us of something we have already seen in any other franchise of the genre, however, it is still a very effective and well-narrated story that matches perfectly with the adventure.
Regarding it´s gameplay, Deadlight is a game that contains many elements that remind of the ones seen in classics such as Flashback, Another World or Prince of Persia, and which it mixes with elements from modern Survival Horror series such as Resident Evil or The Last of Us. One of the main gameplay elements of Deadlight will be its platforming sections. Randall will be able to perform a wide variety of actions such a running, jumping, climbing o rolling in order to overcome the many obstacles and traps he will come across in the stages. Another of Deadlight’s main gameplay elements will be the combat against the undead, for which Randall will be able to use melee and fire weapons for some good old zombie-head-smashing, although the best option will always be avoiding combat whenever possible, or using the environment elements to kill as many as brain eaters as possible without wasting our precious ammo. The game makes use of a Stamina Gauge that will limit some of the actions that Randall will be able to perform, such as hang from certain places or attack with melee weapons. If we run out of Stamina, Randall won’t be able to perform those actions till its Stamina Gauge fills up (automatically) again, which could lead to some serious trouble if we are not careful.
Regarding the game’s presentation, Deadlight is definitely a good-looking game, although it does not stand out in any aspect. Like I mentioned before, the game uses the popular 2.5D graphic style. The models of the characters are well done, and the same foes for the animations, but the most remarkable aspect of the game is it’s stages, all of them packed with all kind of details that really help to transmit the feeling of an apocalyptic world, on top of having clever designs that really encourage exploration in order to find all kind of items that will reveal more information about world of Deadlight. The game also includes a nice little extra, for among the many secret items we will be able to find while we explore the stages, we can find the typical “portable consoles” any kid of the 80s and early 90s used to play with and which we will actually be able to play with whenever we want. It is definitely a nice little wink from Tequila Works to the most veteran players that will surely bring a smile to their face as the recall good old times, while at the same time it might make younger players wonder how the hell that could be considered a “videogame”, but it was… it was… Ahhhh, good old times… I’m getting so old…
Deadlight might not be a revolution at either a gameplay or narrative level, but it surely is a fun and solid game with a classic touch that will please the fans of the above mentioned Flashback, Another World or Prince of Persia and the 2D action-adventure games in general. The game is available in digital format for PC and Xbox 360 on its normal version, and on PC, PS4 and Xbox One on its “Director´s Cut” version, which includes some extra content, and which is also available for PS4 and Xbox One on physical format. If you are into classic action-adventure games and worlds full of zombies, you should definitely give Deadlight a try, as I´m sure it won´t disappoint you. Well then, let the brain eater hunting begin!
