Hello everyone! In the last entry I talked about Yomawari Midnight Shadows, a Japanese Survival Horror game with a different approach to the Survival Horror formula, and in this new entry I’m going talk about another game that also takes a different approach on a very popular (and overpopulated) genre like the adventure genre. It’s a game I discovered a couple of years ago by chance and which I have been following closely since then. The game I’m talking about is Ghost of a Tale. Let’s have a look at that new adventure game born thanks to the help of the crowdfunding.

Hello everyone! In the last entry I talked about Battle Chasers Nightwar, an indie game inspired by the classic RPG games, and in this new entry I´m going to talk about another low budget game, although opposite to what we saw in Battle Chasers, with its conservative style, the game I´m going to talk about offers a new and refreshing experience on such a classic and popular (and rather exploited) genre like the Survival Horror genre. The game is called Yomawari: Midnight Shadows. Let see what this little Japanese gaming jewel has to offer.

Hello everyone! Boy time surely flies… It seems it was just yesterday when the new year started, and we are already all the way into February… Anyway, for the first (rather late) entry of this new year I bring you a shot of pure “neoretro” gaming. The game is called Battle Chasers Nightwar. Have you ever wonder how it would be to mix the dungeons and looting of Diablo with the turn-based combats of traditional JRPG games? If so, keep reading, for I might just have the perfect game for you.

Hello everyone! In the last entry I talked about Fight ‘N Rage, a classic style 2D Beat ‘Em Up game inspired in some of the classics of a genre that was once among one of the most popular genres in the industry, and in this new entry I’m going to talk about yet another game that belongs to that very same genre. In fact, this game actually belongs to one of the “founding fathers” of the genre together with the Kunio-kun series, of which return I already talked about in this blog. Yup, as many of you already probably guess, I’m talking about the legendary Double Dragon. Let’s see what the return of one of the most popular games of the last century has to offer in its return in the 21st century.

Hello everyone! In the last entry I talked about several retro style games that belong to the recent wave of “neoclassical” games that have been taking the download services by storm in the recent years, and in this new entry I bring you yet another title that belongs to the same movement and that reaffirms that this recent “thing for the retro” it´s definitely far from being a fashion fueled by all those “nostalgia fighters” out there. The game is called Fight ´N Rage. Let´s see what this new gem of the indie scene has to offer.

Indies made in Spain

Hello everyone! How is life going? After a rather busy September (which included my yearly visit to the Tokyo Game Show) I’m back to talk about the kind of games that some of us love and not many talk about. In the last entry I talked about Deadlight, a classic style action/adventure game developed in Spain, and for this new entry we are going to remain in the Iberian Peninsula for a while more to talk about another Spanish team that is trying to make a place for themselves in this competitive industry. Maybe some of the younger players do not know it, but Spain was a world-leading industry when it came to video games in the 80s and early 90s, a period that is known to many as the “Golden age of Spanish software” and in which companies such as Dinamic Software, Topo Soft or Opera Soft, among many others, released some of the best titles of its time. Unfortunately, the Spanish industry was unable to adapt to the 16-bit platforms, which led to a decline of the Spanish game industry and thus the end of its particular golden era. Of course, that was not the end of the Spanish game industry itself, as years later new companies would appear, such as Pyro Studios, who obtained international acclaim with their Commandos series, however, many of these new companies would also end up in bankruptcy, and the Spanish industry never managed to recover its former glory, while at the same time Japanese companies such as Nintendo, Sega, Konami or Capcom took the industry by storm with games such as Super Mario Bros, Sonic, Street Fighter 2 or Contra just to name a few, games that would end up becoming some of most well-known classics of the industry. However, the Spanish game industry has kept generating interesting teams and games, such as Tequila Works, creators of the previously mentioned Deadlight or the recent and alluring Rime, or MercurySteam, creators of the latest Castlevania trilogy and the recent remake of Metroid Samus Returns. Both are just but a small sample of the big amount of talented developers that we can inside the Spanish game industry, a talent which also includes a very lively indie scenes, which includes creators such as Locomalito with games such as Maldita Castilla, The Curse of Issyos or Hydorah, all of them tributes to the 8-bit era and the arcade classics, or the guys from Lince Works and their Aragami, an interesting proposal inside the stealth genre, and it is precisely in this Spanish indie scene where we find can find also DYA games, which are the protagonists of this new entry.

Hello everyone! How is the summer going so far? Did you recall old times already with Freedom Planet, the distant cousin of Sonic of which I talked about in the last entry? In this new entry I´m going to talk about another 2D game, although it is a much more contemporary game despite its classic aroma. Do you like classic action-adventure games and stories about apocalyptic worlds full of brain-eating undead such as The Walking Dead, World War Z or Dawn of the Dead? Yeah? Then keep reading, for I might have just the perfect game for you. The game is called Deadlight.

Hello everyone! In the last entry I talked about a modern JRPG game inspired by the classics, and in this new entry I’m going to talk about another game inspired by a classic that conquered the screens of a whole generation of button-mashers, although this time around we change the RPG genre for the platforming one. Were you a fan of Sonic? Did you like Mega Drive classics such as Dynamite Headdy or Rocket Knight Adventures, or Saturn classics such as Astral or Silhoutte Mirage? If the answer is yes, keep reading, for the game described in the next lines is definitely made for someone like you (or just anyone who loves classic 16-bit era plataformers). The game is called Freedom Planet.

Hello everyone! How is the summer going so far? Good? I hope you are using your precious (and well-deserved) holidays to play all the those games you had pending (well, and to go to the beach or party with your friends, you know, all those pointless secondary things we gamers have to do from time to time to pretend to be social creatures like the rest). In this new entry I´m going to talk about a JRPG game that was released a few months back in the west. The game is called Exist Archive: The Other Side of the Sky. Let´s have a look at the game behind this long title.

A group of soldiers patrols a cold snowy area. Suddenly, they find some suspicious footprints, so they decide to follow them, and they lead them to a mysterious young girl playing a flute. The soldiers ask the girl to surrender and aim at her with their rifles, but the girl ignores them and keeps playing her flute. Angered by the girl’s behavior, the soldiers ready their rifles and prepare to fire, but then, all of sudden, a shadow jumps out of the bushes nearby and dashes towards them. A couple of seconds later, one of the soldiers can hear his colleagues agonizing screams, and when he finally manages to react, he can see the figure of a samurai holding two swords standing between them. The solder tries to aim with his rifle, but he suddenly feels a piercing pain in his abdomen that completely immobilizes him. When he looks down, he can see a deep cut from which his blood flows like a steam down to the white snow. He feels everything around him starts to get blurry, and then he finally collapses over the blood soaked snow underneath his feet. The solider lies down on the floor quietly while he listens to the sound of the flute, till finally everything fades out. On the distance, a solider has witnessed the whole happening, and decides to run to set the alarm. The samurai and the young girl remain idle looking at the soldier in complete silence, as if they already knew what was going to happen next. Suddenly, a shot can be heard in the distance, and after stumbling for a few meters, the soldier finally collapses. An old man comes down a nearby hill, and the samurai makes a sign to them indicating it´s time to move on. No. I did not decide to start writing novels (at least for now). This is just one of the many possible scenarios we will be able to experience while playing the game I´m going to talk in this new entry. The game is called Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun. Hello everyone, and welcome to a new entry of my blog.

Gaming Almanacs

Hello everyone! How are the button-mashing sessions going? A while back I started several other sections of the blog, but due to the lack of time (I really need longer days!) I could no dedicate as much attention as I wanted to them (although I promise I’m working on it), so in this entry I’m going to talk about something different. Well… kinda… Instead of games, I’m going to talk about books… related to games. No good collection can be complete without a few almanacs that show to your guests that you are not just some button-mashing loony, but a well-read-button-mashing loony. In the recent years the market has received several high quality “gaming almanacs” in which some erudites share all the knowledge they have gathered for years about our favorite hobby, so in this entry I will review some of the most interesting almanacs. Please keep in mind that, despite including some art, the books included in this list ARE NOT artbooks per se, neither are they guidebooks, but books that provide all kind of information about the games and companies themselves. Also, please keep in mind all these books are in English. Very well then, after this small but necessary clarification, let’s review these interesting gaming books.
Hardcore Gaming 101 Presents: The Guide to Shoot-Em-Ups Vol. 1
The website Hardcore Gaming 101 is definitely one of the best sources of knowledge on the industry, and more specifically about the early days of the relatively still young industry. Thanks to the support from the fans, the team behind the website has managed to publish a series of almanacs that compile several of the articles published on the website. The first book I will talk about will be The Guide to Shoot-Em-Ups Vol. 1, a book that, just like its name indicates, gathers information about some of the best classic Shoot ‘Em Up games. The book includes 154 full color pages full of articles related to over 50 titles from the 80s and 90s with all kind of information and pictures of classics such as Zanac, Aleste / Power Strike, MUSHA, Space Megaforce, The Guardian Legend, Star Soldier, Gate of Thunder, Sapphire, Thunder Force, Hyper Duel, R-Type, X-Multiply, Dragon Breed, Cotton, Rayxanber, Recca, Magical Chase, Coryoon or Gleylancer, making it a perfect collector´s piece for any fans of the genre. You can check the complete list of titles included in the book here: http://www.hardcoregaming101.net/shooterbook/shooterbook.htm

Hello everyone! Did you try already Alwa’s Awakening, the retro style Metroidvania game I talked about in the last entry? If you haven’t and you like classic style adventures, I strongly suggest you to give it a try. Speaking retro games, I’m sure some of you just can’t get enough of this kind of games (I surely can’t!), so in order not to interrupt the “retro flow” of the last entries, in this entry I’m going to talk about another retro style game that will surely bring some good memories to all the veteran button mashers out there, for this time around is not just a game that pays tribute to the classics, but more like a direct sequel of a franchise that has the honor of being the franchise that set many of the guidelines to follow for the whole Beat ‘Em Up genre, and that’s saying a lot, for its one of the genres that ruled during the arcades golden era and has managed to survive till the current times of HD and FPS madness. Which is the game you say? Well, the game is no more and no less than River City Ramson Undeground. Yes, you read well. The Japanese gangs classic is back, and just in case someone had any doubts, I can already advance you that it came back big time, so if you are a fan of the adventures of Alex and Ryan, I recommend you to keep reading, and if you are not a fan and you don’t even know what the hell is River City Ramson, I recommend you to keep reading too, for you will discover the origin of many of the modern classics you might be playing, such as Devil May Cry, God of War or the recent and awesome Nier: Automata.

Hello everyone! How are the combats against aliens going with Earth’s Dawn? After a few hectic weeks, I’m coming with an entry in which I will talk about a modern game made the “old fashioned way”. In this blog I have talked already about games such Oniken, Odallus: The Dark Call, Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight or Owlboy, games that, just like the awesome Shovel Knight, belong to that recent trend of games that imitate the 8/16-bit classics and that are being so well received by the gaming community, proving that there is still a place for this kind of games in the market, and in this new entry I’m going to talk about another game that, despite not being as popular the above mentioned Shovel Knight or the also awesome Hyper Light Drifter, also manages to deliver a good retro gaming experience adapted to the current times that manages to transmit all the magic of the classics of the 80s. The game is called Castle in the Darkness. Let’s see what the little gem of the indie gaming scene has to offer.

Hello everyone! Happy New Year! I know, I know, a bit late, but the start of the new year was a bit hectic for me… So how is the new year treating you so far? All good? Did you try already Owlboy, the classic style 2D adventure of which I talked about in the last entry? If you still haven´t, I strongly recommended you to do so, especially if you like 2D adventures. Just like I finished last year talking about a very special game (or at least very special for me), I decided to start this new year talking about other special game, a game that drew my attention right from the first time I saw it, especially due to its similarities with some of the titles of one of my favorite developers, my beloved Vanillaware. In this blog I have already talked about several JRPG games such as Nostalgia, Sands of Destruction, Crimson Gem Saga, Legend of Legacy or Suikoden Tierkreis, and Tactic JRPG game such as Luminous Arc, Valkyrie Profile, Onimusha Tactics, Mercenaries Saga 2 or Vanguard Bandits, but this time around I´m going to talk about a game that mixes elements from both styles, and event elements from table top games and management games, to create it´s very own style.
