Hello everyone! How are the button-mashing sessions going? A while back I started several other sections of the blog, but due to the lack of time (I really need longer days!) I could no dedicate as much attention as I wanted to them (although I promise I’m working on it), so in this entry I’m going to talk about something different. Well… kinda… Instead of games, I’m going to talk about books… related to games. No good collection can be complete without a few almanacs that show to your guests that you are not just some button-mashing loony, but a well-read-button-mashing loony. In the recent years the market has received several high quality “gaming almanacs” in which some erudites share all the knowledge they have gathered for years about our favorite hobby, so in this entry I will review some of the most interesting almanacs. Please keep in mind that, despite including some art, the books included in this list ARE NOT artbooks per se, neither are they guidebooks, but books that provide all kind of information about the games and companies themselves. Also, please keep in mind all these books are in English. Very well then, after this small but necessary clarification, let’s review these interesting gaming books. 


Hardcore Gaming 101 Presents: The Guide to Shoot-Em-Ups Vol. 1

The website Hardcore Gaming 101 is definitely one of the best sources of knowledge on the industry, and more specifically about the early days of the relatively still young industry. Thanks to the support from the fans, the team behind the website has managed to publish a series of almanacs that compile several of the articles published on the website. The first book I will talk about will be The Guide to Shoot-Em-Ups Vol. 1, a book that, just like its name indicates, gathers information about some of the best classic Shoot ‘Em Up games. The book includes 154 full color pages full of articles related to over 50 titles from the 80s and 90s with all kind of information and pictures of classics such as Zanac, Aleste / Power Strike, MUSHA, Space Megaforce, The Guardian Legend, Star Soldier, Gate of Thunder, Sapphire, Thunder Force, Hyper Duel, R-Type, X-Multiply, Dragon Breed, Cotton, Rayxanber, Recca, Magical Chase, Coryoon or Gleylancer, making it a perfect collector´s piece for any fans of the genre. ¡Hola a tod@s! ¿Qué tal van esa viciadas? Hace tiempo empecé otras secciones del blog, pero debido a la falta de tiempo, no he podido dedicarles la atención que me gustaría, así que en esta entrada vamos darle un descanso a los videojuegos para hablar de libros… relacionados con los videojuegos. Ninguna buena colección que se precie puede estar completa sin sus respectivos almanaques para demostrar a tus invitados que no eres un simple friki machacabotones, sino que además eres un auténtico “estudioso” del tema (que no digan que los frikis no tenemos cultura). En los últimos años han sido saliendo una gran cantidad de “almanaques” de videojuegos de gran calidad donde grandes eruditos comparten toda la sabiduría que han almacenado durante años sobre nuestro entretenimiento favorito, así que en esta entrada voy a repasar algunos de los almanaques más interesantes. Tened en cuenta que los libros incluidos en esta lista NO SON libros de arte como tal a pesar de contener arte de los juegos con los que están relacionados, ni tampoco son guías, sino libros que ofrecen todo tipo de información relacionada con los juegos y compañías en sí, y que además están en INGLÉS. Muy bien pues, una vez hecha esta pequeña pero necesaria aclaración, echemos un vistazo a estos interesantes libros.

La página web Hardcore Gaming 101 es sin lugar a duda alguna una de las mejores fuentes de conocimiento sobre la industria de los videojuegos, y más en concreto sobre el pasado de esta aún relativamente joven industria. Gracias a la financiación que la web a conseguido través de algunos de sus fans, el equipo ha logrado publicar una serie de almanaques que recopilan algunos de los mejores artículos de esta web. El primero del que hablaré es The Guide to Shoot-Em-Ups Vol. 1, un libro que, como su propio nombre india, reúne información sobre algunos de los mejores Shoot ´Em Ups clásicos. In this new entry I´m going to talk about another retro style indie game called Titan Souls. Have you ever tried to imagine how would the timeless classics Shadow of the Colossus look like in 2D? Is Fumito Ueda´s and Team ICO game one of your favorite games? If the answer to those two questions is yes, then keep reading, for I´m completely convinced this game is made for you. If the answer is no… well, keep reading as well, for this might be a good chance to discover a really interesting indie game, as well as one of the most unique and critically acclaimed games in the extensive catalogue of Sony´s PlayStation 2.

En esta nueva entrada os traigo otro juego de estilo retro llamado Titan Souls. ¿Alguna vez os habéis imaginado cómo hubiera sido el clásico atemporal Shadow of the Colossus de haber sido en 2D? ¿Es la obra de Fumito Ueda y el Team ICO uno de vuestros juegos favoritos? Si la respuesta a esas dos preguntas es sí, entonces seguid leyendo, porque este juego está hecho para vosotros. Si la respuesta es no… seguid leyendo también, pues podría ser una buena oportunidad para descubrir un juego indi muy interesante, y de paso uno de los juegos más únicos y aclamados del extenso catálogo de PlayStation 2.
