Chaos Code - Chaos with style

Hello everyone! After the last entry dedicated to the “brother-in-law” of Mega Man, in this new entry I´m going back to the 2D fighting genre with a game that belongs to the second “golden age” that this classic genre seems to be going through nowadays as I mentioned in the entry dedicated to the astonishing Yatagarasu. The game I´m talking about is Chaos Code. Let´s see what this new fighting game made in the Far East has to offer.

As I was saying, Chaos Code is a 2D fighting game developed by the little known FK Digital, a small digital entertainment company based in Australia, although Chaos Code was developed by the branch the company has in Taiwan. The game was first released for the Sega arcade system RingWide in Japan in 2011, and then ported and published by Arc System Works (BlazBlue/Guilty Gear) exclusively for the PS3 through the platform´s online service PlayStation Network, which could be one of the reasons why many have never heard of this game before. The story of Chaos Code takes us to a world where humans have discovered a kind of energy known as “Chaotics” which cannot be exhausted. In just 10 years the Chaotics became humanity´s main energy source. However, one day the scientist that discovered the Chaotics just disappeared leaving no trace other than a cryptic message with the words “Chaos Code”, saying that however discovers it´s secret will receive a “great reward”, and which serves as a kick off for the story of the game, in which each character will fight to get the “Chaos Code” for several reason, which go from dark government plots, to mangakas trying to get inspiration for the stories of their new manga, or chefs who plan to sell the secret of the Chaos Code to use the money to rebuilt their restaurant. To be sincere, the story of the game is not only hilarious, but also pretty confusing, perhaps due to the... “unique” translation of the game, but anyway, we all know in this kind of game what matters the most is the gameplay, and luckily for us Chaos Code does a much better job in that sense (which was not that difficult).

As for the gameplay of the game, as opposite as we could see in Yatagarasu, which makes use of a more traditional gameplay style, the combats in Chaos Code are close to what we can see in modern 2D fighting games such as the popular BlazBlue o Guilty Gear franchises, with really fast and fluid combats (especially among the most experienced players) with huge combos. In order to do this, Chaos Code makes use of four buttons layout, with two of these buttons designated to the weak and strong punches, and the other two designated to the weak and strong kicks, and just like in many other 2D fighting games, we will be able to combine these buttons in other to perform each character´s combos and special techniques.

On top of this, Chaos Code also includes other features that help to make the game experience much more rich and deep, and among these features we find:

- Chaos Gauge: this gauge is displayed at the bottom part of the screen during the combats, and is the typical gauge that will display how much power our character gathers during the combat, and which we will be able to use in several ways. This gauge will fill up as we attack our rivals, and will deplete every time we use certain skills.

- EX Special Move: by using part of our Chaos Gauge we will be able to perform more powerful versions of our special attacks, as we could see also for example with the EX attacks of Street Fighter.

- Ultimate/Destruction Chaos: these are the most powerful attacks our character will be able to perform, and thus the one that more power will need. They are the equivalent to Street Fighter´s Super/Ultra attacks.

- Guard Break Attack: by using part of our Chaos Gauge we will be able to perform an attack impossible to block that will leave our rivals exposed.

- Tactical Guard: by using part of our Chaos Gauge our character will automatically perform a counterattack after blocking one of our rival´s attacks.

- Exceed Chaos: by using all the power of our Chaos Gauge when it reaches its maximum, we will be able to enter in a state that will apply (for a few moments) several effects such as restoring our Stun Gauge, giving us an unlimited Chaos Gauge, life regeneration, the possibility to cancel all normal and special attacks, stop the combat´s chronometer and push our rivals away when this power is activated.

- Stun Gauge: this gauge located just underneath the Health Gauge at the top of the screen will fill up every time we get hit bout our rivals. If this bar ever fills up completely, we will be stunned for a short moment in which we will be completely exposed to our rivals.

On top of all these features, we will also be able to perform other movements typical of the 2D fighting games such as the throws (and the possibility to block them), double jumps and super jumps or counterattacks. But were Chaos Code really sets itself apart from the rest is in the possibility of customizing our character before the combats. We will have 2 customization options:

- Hop/Run: Chaos Code will also allow the players to use a movement to quickly approach to rivals (or get away from them), but as opposite as seen in other games were we must do it always in a predetermined way, Chaos Code will give us the option to do it in two different ways, being these a “quick hop”, which will also allow us to cancel normal attacks and charge our Chaos Gauge more quickly, making it ideal for the more offensive players, or “running”, which will allow us to quickly approach to our rivals (or get away from them).

- Skill Selection: on top of all the normal and special moves that each character will already have available to use during the combats, Chaos Code will also allow to choose 2 extra skills from among several, with these varying depending on the selected character.

The games has 14 selectable characters.

All these options, on top of allowing us to further adapt the characters to our playing style, will also help to increase the fighting style variety of the characters, so even two players could be playing with the same character in a match, depending on the customization options they chose, they way the character will play will vary considerably. To tell you the truth, I think Chaos Code is a pretty player-friendly game, adapting to all kinds of playing style, from “combo addicts” to “button-mashing-maniacs”, although that doesn’t mean that we will be able to beat all our rivals by just button-mashing (at least not the most experienced ones). And talking about characters, the game´s fighters roster includes 14 characters (16 for the arcade version available just in Japan), all of them with their own unique fighting style, which include from your typical shonen manga characters, to robot maids and giant fighting chefs. I know, is still not as wacky as Guilty Gear, but is not bad. The characters are:

                                  Hikaru (has 2 versions)                                              Kagari

                                                   Vein                                                           Rui

                                               Cthylla                                                        Hermes

                                                Bravo                                                      Cait & Sith

                                             Catherine                                                 Cerberus

                                                  Celia                                                   Celia II Kai

Kudlak

As for the game modes, Chaos Code includes 3 game modes:

- Story Mode: the typical mode in which we will select a character and fight the other characters in successive combats while the story is narrated via small conversations between the characters between the combats. Each character will have several endings, and these will vary depending on the results of the combats.

- Versus Mode: another classic mode what will allow to play individual Player VS Com and Player VS Player combats.

- Practice Mode: yet another classic mode that will allow us to train the techniques and combos of the characters.

And that’s it. Yeah, I know what many of you are thinking right now “what a chump, he forgot to mention the most important mode: the online mode”. Well, actually, no, I didn’t. The game just doesn´t have one (I guess this is where most of you will stop reading). And now those of you who kept reading are thinking “and why the hell you didn´t say that before so I didn´t waste my time?” Well, because before disappointing you, I wanted to show you the good things the game has to offer, which, as you can see, are many. However, yeah, I agree that it´s something difficult to understand in these times, especially in this kind of game where the competitive aspect is so important, but is the way it is... Look at the bright side! The beer and pizza nights playing games with the buddies are back! Well, provided of course your job/wife/children leave some of you enough time to go over a buddy´s... At the release time of the title, the team excused themselves from not including the mode claiming that, due to the limited resources they had, it was just impossible for them to include this feature properly before the deadline of the project, although they promised they would implement such feature via an update after the release, the only problem is that there´s been no news about it so far since the release, so just don´t hope to much...

Finally, regarding the graphics of the game, although the title is surely not the next big thing, the graphics are definitely at a good level, with colorful and very detailed sprites and really fluent animations, and the same goes for the stages where the combats will take placed, which offer a great variety and are full of life and details.

Bottom line, to be the first game developed by a team with no previous experience in the genre, Chaos Code is definitely a good 2D fighter and a good first step for a possible franchise, and although it is true the game doesn´t exceed in anything it does, at least everything it does it does it well (except for the online), although that could also be perhaps its biggest fault: not doing anything special in a moment when there are so many awesome 2D fighters available in the market. I´m sure that (provided you read this far) many of you are still trying to recover from the letdown of the absence of an online mode, but other than this, Chaos Code surely has enough to offer to please the fans of the genre, especially if we think about the more than affordable price at which the game is available in PlayStation Network. Enjoy! And don´t forget the pizza and the beers!
