Indies made in Spain

HAZ CLIC AQUÍ PARA LEER ESTA ENTRADA EN ESPAÑOL.

Hello everyone! How is life going? After a rather busy September (which included my yearly visit to the Tokyo Game Show) I’m back to talk about the kind of games that some of us love and not many talk about. In the last entry I talked about Deadlight, a classic style action/adventure game developed in Spain, and for this new entry we are going to remain in the Iberian Peninsula for a while more to talk about another Spanish team that is trying to make a place for themselves in this competitive industry. Maybe some of the younger players do not know it, but Spain was a world-leading industry when it came to video games in the 80s and early 90s, a period that is known to many as the “Golden age of Spanish software” and in which companies such as Dinamic Software, Topo Soft or Opera Soft, among many others, released some of the best titles of its time. Unfortunately, the Spanish industry was unable to adapt to the 16-bit platforms, which led to a decline of the Spanish game industry and thus the end of its particular golden era. Of course, that was not the end of the Spanish game industry itself, as years later new companies would appear, such as Pyro Studios, who obtained international acclaim with their Commandos series, however, many of these new companies would also end up in bankruptcy, and the Spanish industry never managed to recover its former glory, while at the same time Japanese companies such as Nintendo, Sega, Konami or Capcom took the industry by storm with games such as Super Mario Bros, Sonic, Street Fighter 2 or Contra just to name a few, games that would end up becoming some of most well-known classics of the industry. However, the Spanish game industry has kept generating interesting teams and games, such as Tequila Works, creators of the previously mentioned Deadlight or the recent and alluring Rime, or MercurySteam, creators of the latest Castlevania trilogy and the recent remake of Metroid Samus Returns. Both are just but a small sample of the big amount of talented developers that we can inside the Spanish game industry, a talent which also includes a very lively indie scenes, which includes creators such as Locomalito with games such as Maldita Castilla, The Curse of Issyos or Hydorah, all of them tributes to the 8-bit era and the arcade classics, or the guys from Lince Works and their Aragami, an interesting proposal inside the stealth genre, and it is precisely in this Spanish indie scene where we find can find also DYA games, which are the protagonists of this new entry.

¡Hola a tod@s!

Hello everyone! How is the summer going so far? Good? I hope you are using your precious (and well-deserved) holidays to play all the those games you had pending (well, and to go to the beach or party with your friends, you know, all those pointless secondary things we gamers have to do from time to time to pretend to be social creatures like the rest). In this new entry I´m going to talk about a JRPG game that was released a few months back in the west. The game is called Exist Archive: The Other Side of the Sky. Let´s have a look at the game behind this long title.

¡Hola a tod@s! ¿Qué tal va el verano? ¿Bien? El juego en cuestión se llama Exist Archive: The Other Side of the Sky.

Shadow Tactics - Commandos in Japan

A group of soldiers patrols a cold snowy area. Suddenly, they find some suspicious footprints, so they decide to follow them, and they lead them to a mysterious young girl playing a flute. The soldiers ask the girl to surrender and aim at her with their rifles, but the girl ignores them and keeps playing her flute. Angered by the girl’s behavior, the soldiers ready their rifles and prepare to fire, but then, all of sudden, a shadow jumps out of the bushes nearby and dashes towards them. A couple of seconds later, one of the soldiers can hear his colleagues agonizing screams, and when he finally manages to react, he can see the figure of a samurai holding two swords standing between them. The solder tries to aim with his rifle, but he suddenly feels a piercing pain in his abdomen that completely immobilizes him. When he looks down, he can see a deep cut from which his blood flows like a steam down to the white snow. He feels everything around him starts to get blurry, and then he finally collapses over the blood soaked snow underneath his feet. The solider lies down on the floor quietly while he listens to the sound of the flute, till finally everything fades out. On the distance, a solider has witnessed the whole happening, and decides to run to set the alarm. The samurai and the young girl remain idle looking at the soldier in complete silence, as if they already knew what was going to happen next. Suddenly, a shot can be heard in the distance, and after stumbling for a few meters, the soldier finally collapses. An old man comes down a nearby hill, and the samurai makes a sign to them indicating it´s time to move on. No. I did not decide to start writing novels (at least for now). This is just one of the many possible scenarios we will be able to experience while playing the game I´m going to talk in this new entry. The game is called Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun. Hello everyone, and welcome to a new entry of my blog.

Gaming Almanacs

HAZ CLIC AQUÍ PARA LEER ESTA ENTRADA EN ESPAÑOL.

Hello everyone! How are the button-mashing sessions going? A while back I started several other sections of the blog, but due to the lack of time (I really need longer days!) I could no dedicate as much attention as I wanted to them (although I promise I’m working on it), so in this entry I’m going to talk about something different. Well… kinda… Instead of games, I’m going to talk about books… related to games. No good collection can be complete without a few almanacs that show to your guests that you are not just some button-mashing loony, but a well-read-button-mashing loony. In the recent years the market has received several high quality “gaming almanacs” in which some erudites share all the knowledge they have gathered for years about our favorite hobby, so in this entry I will review some of the most interesting almanacs. Please keep in mind that, despite including some art, the books included in this list ARE NOT artbooks per se, neither are they guidebooks, but books that provide all kind of information about the games and companies themselves. Also, please keep in mind all these books are in English. Very well then, after this small but necessary clarification, let’s review these interesting gaming books.

Hardcore Gaming 101 Presents: The Guide to Shoot-Em-Ups Vol. 1

The website Hardcore Gaming 101 is definitely one of the best sources of knowledge on the industry, and more specifically about the early days of the relatively still young industry. Thanks to the support from the fans, the team behind the website has managed to publish a series of almanacs that compile several of the articles published on the website. The first book I will talk about will be The Guide to Shoot-Em-Ups Vol. 1, a book that, just like its name indicates, gathers information about some of the best classic Shoot ‘Em Up games. The book includes 154 full color pages full of articles related to over 50 titles from the 80s and 90s with all kind of information and pictures of classics such as Zanac, Aleste / Power Strike, MUSHA, Space Megaforce, The Guardian Legend, Star Soldier, Gate of Thunder, Sapphire, Thunder Force, Hyper Duel, R-Type, X-Multiply, Dragon Breed, Cotton, Rayxanber, Recca, Magical Chase, Coryoon or Gleylancer, making it a perfect collector´s piece for any fans of the genre. Almanaques de juegos

CLICK HERE TO READ THIS ENTRY IN ENGLISH.

¡Hola a tod@s!

Hardcore Gaming 101 Presents: The Guide to Shoot-Em-Ups Vol. 1
