Hello everyone! Here I am with one more entry of the blog after a few busy days that kept me from bothering you with my usual mumbo jumbo about God forsaken games. Anyway, are you having fun with “the Expendables” from the last entry? Spilled tones of pixilated blood already? In this entry I´m going to talk about yet another classic style game full of action and muscles, although this time around we will completely change the genre and we will go back to the 2D Versus genre with a game called Dark Awake: The King Has No Name. Let´s see what this sword and sorcery fighting game has to offer.

Hello everyone! How is it going recalling old times while travelling around the world in Nostalgia? It is indeed nostalgic, right? And talking about nostalgia, in this new entry I´m going to talk about yet another game that, just as the JRPG from the last entry for Nintendo DS, aims to pay tribute to the classic 8 and 16-bit games, drawing inspiration from them to deliver an adventure that will take us straight to the past of action games, and that belong to the recent wave of games brewed in the popular Kickstarter crowdfunding website like Shadowrun Returns, The Banner Saga, Pillars of Eternity, Shovel Knight, or the future Mighty No. 9, Shantae, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night or Torment: Tides of Numenera. The game is called Mercenary Kings. Let´s see what this adventure full of pixilated testosterone, bullets and blood has to offer.

Nostalgia - JRPG for the nostalgics

HAZ CLIC AQUÍ PARA LEER ESTA ENTRADA EN ESPAÑOL.

Hello everybody! After the last entry dedicated to the 2D fighting game Chaos Code for PS3 and arcades, in this entry I´m going to talk about a game that belongs to another of my favorite genres: the RPG, and more specifically about the Japanese version of this genre, known as JRPG. Although nowadays this genre is not as relevant as it once used to be (except for Japan, where this genre has always remained popular), probably due to the problems that many Japanese developers experienced in the late years adapting to the new platforms and the demands of a new public with new expectations, and to the rise of western RPG games such as Fable, Oblivion, Skyrim or Fallout 3, in the 8, 16 and 32-bit era the JRPG genre was one of the most prominent genres in the game industry, and in this genre we can find several games that have achieved the status of classics of the game industry such as Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Breath of Fire, Illusion of Time, Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, Suikoden, Vagrant Story, Wild Arms or the Tales Of series among many, many others. As I was saying, nowadays this genre is not as popular as it once was, playing a secondary role in the actual industry, with the exception of a few titans that still manage to gather the attention of the media and the public, such as Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, although this has not stopped the genre from delivering interesting new games from time to time, especially in the portable platforms, which seem to have become the new home for this kind of titles, and this specially true with the Nintendo DS, the console that received the latest entries of several important franchises of the genre such as Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts, Valkyrie Profile and Suikoden, as is precisely inside the catalog of Nintendo´s handheld that we can find the game I´m going to talk about in this new entry. The game is Nostalgia.

Nostalgia - JRPG para nostálgicos

¡Hola a tod@s!

Chaos Code - Chaos with style

HAZ CLIC AQUÍ PARA LEER ESTA ENTRADA EN ESPAÑOL.

Hello everyone! After the last entry dedicated to the “brother-in-law” of Mega Man, in this new entry I´m going back to the 2D fighting genre with a game that belongs to the second “golden age” that this classic genre seems to be going through nowadays as I mentioned in the entry dedicated to the astonishing Yatagarasu. The game I´m talking about is Chaos Code. Let´s see what this new fighting game made in the Far East has to offer.

As I was saying, Chaos Code is a 2D fighting game developed by the little known FK Digital, a small digital entertainment company based in Australia, although Chaos Code was developed by the branch the company has in Taiwan. The game was first released for the Sega arcade system RingWide in Japan in 2011, and then ported and published by Arc System Works (BlazBlue/Guilty Gear) exclusively for the PS3 through the platform´s online service PlayStation Network, which could be one of the reasons why many have never heard of this game before. The story of Chaos Code takes us to a world where humans have discovered a kind of energy known as “Chaotics” which cannot be exhausted. In just 10 years the Chaotics became humanity´s main energy source. However, one day the scientist that discovered the Chaotics just disappeared leaving no trace other than a cryptic message with the words “Chaos Code”, saying that however discovers it´s secret will receive a “great reward”, and which serves as a kick off for the story of the game, in which each character will fight to get the “Chaos Code” for several reason, which go from dark government plots, to mangakas trying to get inspiration for the stories of their new manga, or chefs who plan to sell the secret of the Chaos Code to use the money to rebuilt their restaurant. To be sincere, the story of the game is not only hilarious, but also pretty confusing, perhaps due to the... “unique” translation of the game, but anyway, we all know in this kind of game what matters the most is the gameplay, and luckily for us Chaos Code does a much better job in that sense (which was not that difficult).

Dragon Ball Figures

HAZ CLIC AQUÍ PARA LEER ESTA ENTRADA EN ESPAÑOL.

Hello everyone! Since lately I feel kind of "inspired", I decided to start yet another of the sections I had in mind for this blog, which is related to one of my passions: figures. I´ve been collecting figures related to video games and anime for years now. For many they are just plastic, but I always saw them as one more form of art. For the first entry of this new section I´m going to talk about several figure collections based on one of the most successful manga/anime franchises ever and also one of my favorites: Dragon Ball. What can I say about the master piece of the Japanese genius of animation Akira Toriyama that hasn´t been already said. He created a manga that was an icon for a whole generation, helping to spread the Japanese manga culture all over the world, and that even nowadays, 30 years after its original release, it´s still popular even among the new generations. Of course 30 years of success gives you a lot of time to create many merchandise related to a franchise (if you don´t agree go ask Star Wars creators), so although describing ALL the stuff related to Dragon Ball that has ever been published would be like trying to take on Kratos and Dante at the same time barehanded in a UFC fight, in this entry I´m going to talk about some of the (in my opinion) best figure collections released in the last years related to the adventues of Son Goku and all his friends.

Figuras de Dragon Ball

¡Hola a tod@s!

The art of prepaid cards in Japan

HAZ CLIC AQUÍ PARA LEER ESTA ENTRADA EN ESPAÑOL.

Hello everyone! In the first entry of this new section I talked about "food for otakus" in Japan, and in this one I´m going to show you several limited edition prepaid cards for download services or online games exclusive for Japan.

It cannot denied, to my regret, that the video game industry (and other entertainment industries) are heading into an era where everything (or almost everything) will be purchased via download. I understand this system has many advantages (saving space, convenience, etc.), but in this sense I admit I´m really old school and still prefer the games with their respective cases and manuals, although seeing the manuals that the games include lately I´m not so sure anymore about it... Despite being very advanced and open minded in many ways (specially regarding new technology), Japanese are still quite reticent to purchase games through the digital platforms, probably due to the fact that many Japanese players are also great collectors (despite the problems with space in my houses), so the game companies have to invent ways to attract those consumers to this kind of format, and what a better way to do it than offering them just what they like the most: more things to collect. Like this, in Japan, other than the typical plain point or prepaid cards, there are also special editions of these designed with the intention of attracting also the collectors to this kind of format, and to tell you the truth, some of those cards are indeed quite difficult to resist if you are into collecting video game stuff. Here a leave you a few examples so you can have a look.

¡Buenas a tod@s!

Hello everyone! When I started this blog I said that I would also talk about other things other than the main topic of this blog (which is video games by the way), so to add a bit of variety to the blog and given that these days I have a bit more of free time, I´m going to start a new section (soon I plan to start more) of the blog in which I will talk about... stuff. Several stuff. But fear not, all that stuff will always be related to what we love the most: being a geek, otaku or whatever you want to call it. Yes, it is about time you come to terms with what you are, because if you are reading this blog, that´s what you are... and that’s what I like you so much! Anyway, in this first entry of this new section I´m going to talk a little bit about Japanese “gastronomy” related to video games and manga/anime, and I specified “little bit” because if I have to mention all that has ever existed, or exists or will one day exist, I will most probably end up making the new Michelin Guide of the otaku gourmet, so I apologize beforehand if I don´t include your favorite establishment/product, but please be my guess and contribute to the cause by adding it to the comments (this said with teary desperate eyes).

Ahhh, Japan, Japan, Japan, what would I do without you... That Japan is a country that is just “different” is something that no one (specially among westerners) doubts, in fact even many Japanese seem to agree on this, and although at times it is indeed too... different, some of us love it that way, after all, if it wasn´t like that we might had never be able to enjoy the stories that came out of the minds of geniuses like Go Nagai, Hayao Miyazaki, Shigeru Miyamoto, Hideo Kojima, Akira Toriyama or Hironobu Sakaguchi among many others that I won´t mention here so I leave some free in Google servers for the rest. Although generalizing is not right, as many of you might already know Japanese give a lot of importance to presentation, and is not like the westerners don´t, but Japanese just do it even more. If we add to this their constant aiming for perfection, their obsession for small details and innovation, they impulse to make of everything an art, and their obvious talent for business, is not strange that Japan is the home for many important companies in a variety of fields such as Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, Nintendo, Sega, Capcom, Konami, Bandai-Namco, Canon, Nissan, Toyota, Mazda, Honda, Yamaha, Mitsubishi and that it´s or I never end this entry. As I was saying before, Japanese apply this philosophy to ALL they do, and that includes also “food and restoration” (if you could call that what I´m about to show you), so you can already image the kinds of things they could come up with, and if you don´t, I will my pleasure to give you a small sample right away.

Biohazard Cafe & Grill

This restaurant/bar inspired in Capcom´s multimillion selling Survival Horror franchise was located (it´s already closed) in the restaurants floor of famous Parco´s department store building in the district of Shibuya, Tokyo. The restaurant used to do often different campaigns offering dishes and beverages inspired in the new releases of the popular zombie franchise.
